Immortals

Tarsem Singh's The Fall is one of my favorite films, and almost unequaled in visual panache. Part of that is because so much of the movie is filmed on location in astounding places in multiple countries around the globe. With his new movie Immortals, it seems he's going the 300 route. From what I can tell from the first trailer that's been released nearly all the locations are computer generated. This is an obvious choice from a budgetary standpoint, and not entirely out of step with Tarsem's previous film, The Cell, which was cold but visually impressive.

I'm hoping Immortals manages to keep some of the warmth and emotion of The Fall, despite having the heavily stylized CGI venear of The Cell and 300. I'm glad to see Tarsem's taste for wacky costumery seems to be intact here, at the very least.

Must Watchmen

There's no question that Zach Snyder can make a damn good looking trailer. 300 ended up being a pretty big let down for me.

With Watchmen he's got his work cut out for him. The 300 graphic novel doesn't have near the devoted following that Watchmen does. Watchmen is arguably the greatest graphic novel ever written. It set the standard for everything that has come out since it was published in 1986. The darker themes and tones of today's comics, the cynicism - all thanks to Watchmen.

I have severe doubts about Snyder's ability to convert Watchmen to the screen. Other directors have considered it. Terry Gilliam came to the conclusion that it wasn't possible. Some people think even if it can be adapted, it shouldn't be.

Well the first trailer for Watchmen has been released. And like 300, it looks absolutely gorgeous. Even if it turns out to be a huge blunder, it's going to be a pretty one.

300 + 1

I recently picked up season two of Samurai Jack. It's a shame the story will never be completed, but it's a brilliant series anyway.

Season two contains the episode used for the following mashup:

That would have been a much better movie.

Early 300 Review

I've posted two trailers for 300 already. So, yeah, I'm pretty excited.

Someone posted a very entertaining review of 300 on Ain't It Cool News. It's chock full of vulgarities, so if that's not your thing don't click.

This quote pretty much sums it up, though: "The movie takes place about a million years ago, and it’s sort of like a prequel to SIN CITY. Except way less guns and cars but twice as much skull splitting. If you watch this movie and go into a Taco Bell, and say to the cashier, “I need some extra sauce packets” guess what? You’re getting twenty sauce packets because your face will punch him in the brain."
