I love horror games. And the Silent Hill series (the little of it that I've played) ranks alongside Resident Evil as the best of the best. So I'm excited that they're bringing the original game to the Wii. And it's not just a simple port, as this trailer shows:
That looks absolutely terrifying. And the chase system, which includes the ability to see what's chasing you at the push of a button, looks like one of the most innovative features in this genre ever.

The movements of the "monsters" are indeed creepy, but a lot of that tension in the trailer is made from the quick cutting and music, so I personally have no concept of the actual atmosphere of the game.
I believe they're keeping it pretty close to the original. In which case it will be a lot of lingering dread, with the occasional burst of action.
The scary thing about Silent Hill, as opposed to Resident Evil, is that there's no way to kill the monsters. At best you can escape until they find you again.
The original game was spooky as hell.
I wasn't aware of the can't kill the monsters concept, that does make the hiding component much creepier. How much damage can you normally take, it appears quite a bit. Also, how smart is the AI when looking for you?
Oh and would you and maybe Kyle and Brian be interested in a one shot play through of D&D in the next couple of weeks?
Didn't they make a movie out of one of these? (I think I saw it at the drive-in, which doesn't count against me because there was a truck bed and vodka tonics involved.)
They mashed plots from multiple games together. It was...ok, and I'm not easy to please. Visually it was compelling, they borrowed actual shots and camera angles right from the games, and the creatures were sufficiently terrifying and bizarre, but the plot kept unraveling into itself and made less and less sense.
It felt like they were trying to compensate for a lack of quality story telling with ambiguity.
I agree that the movie had some great stuff going on visually. And the scene where Pyramid Head ripped that girl's entire skin off in one deft move was pretty amazing.
Otherwise, pretty terrible.
